At CMFTO, decorating for the holidays and finding the perfect gift for everyone on our list is all part of the magic of the season.
This year, we were inspired by the simplicity of natural elements, such as poinsettias, fresh greenery, and colorful berries, to create a classic palette and minimal aesthetic. (A mallard decoy — a perennial favorite — complements the look, dressed in a dapper red chiffon ribbon.) At home, our choice of Christmas tree is a concolor fir, which has a beautiful blue color and a subtle citrus scent.
In a nod to family tradition, our tablescape includes candlelight, pale-green goblets, our favorite holiday china, and cheeky Christmas ornaments that were a gift from a dear friend. A leather book used to record guests’ names is another treasured gift — and a constant from year to year.
Speciality foods are some of our favorite items for gifting, as they are beautifully packaged and can easily be personalized. Based in Chicago, The Cheese People offer a delicious variety of unique creations, from applewood gouda to a sweet cream cheddar spread rolled in pistachios. For peak winter fruit like pears and apples, Harry & David is a standout source.
Originally focused on the foods of Scotland and the British Isles, Mackenzie Limited has a unique selection of appetizers — a thoughtful gift for a busy hostess or anyone who appreciates gourmet bites. We love the Vanilla Bourbon Bacon “Lollipops,” sweet and salty treats made with imported Danish slab bacon. Beyond appetizers, Allen Brothers is our favorite source for aged, hand-cut steaks, from USDA Prime filets to Wagyu beef.

Finally, hand-crafted sweets are irresistible and make a thoughtful gift. We love Belgian Chocolatier Piron, a family-owned store in Evanston on Chicago’s North Shore, for chocolate that’s as beautiful as it is delicious — from picture-perfect Yule Logs to glossy Brandied Cherry Cordials. When it comes to pastries, the Vermont Country Store offers a handmade German stollen — rich with butter, rum, almonds, and candied citrus peel. Packed in a festive red tin, it has an unmatched flavor that’s the essence of the season!
